Tolmie Peak and Fire Lookout

Tolmie Peak and Fire lookout has some impressive 360* views. The road to the trailhead does close in the winter. I hit this trail when we were having some pretty intense wildfires, so there is a great deal of haze in the views.

Trail info
Miles- 5.6 miles
Elevation- 1540ft gain
The logging road drive is, well, a typical logging road, rough and bumpy. While there were mainly all terrain type vehicles on the road and at the trailhead, I did see a Honda Civic and a Charger slowly making their way so it can be done. There are several points in the drive that have some amazing views.
From the trailhead to the lake the trail is very easy... honestly for a fire lookout this entire hire was pretty easy. After the lake the ascent and switchbacks begin.
There can be a considerable amount of bugs on this trail, so I would advise taking precautions for bugs and potentially ticks. I like using the citronella bands and then only spraying around my ankles and my pack with deep woods tick spray. I try really hard not to put any sprays on my skin.
Early in the switchbacks there are some breath-taking (not just literally) views of Mt. Rainier, they make for perfect breath catchers if anyone in your group or you needs it.
To think these views aren't even at the top. The lake is pristine, Rainier standing in all her glory. It only gets better if you have a clear day.
Once you have reached the ridge line to the lookout you can see to the North and can see the the Sound, Olympics, and much of the Cascade range. The alpine meadows were full of beautiful flowers when we were venturing about.
Once you reach the top and have all the views you won't want to leave and with the lookout there as shelter the desire is even stronger.
Be mindful of the cubby, greedy little chipmunk as it will get right in your bag and steal your snacks. It is not afraid at all, came right up onto my leg ready for a snack, also scared the crap outta me since I had no idea it was even there.
Construction of Tolmie Peak lookout began in 1932 and was opened in 1933. You cannot stay or rent the lookout at this time.
If you trek a bit beyond the lookout you will reach Tolmie Peak. Please beware this short section is not for the faint of heart and should be taken slowly and very careful as it is a bit sketchy. There are several areas that are a very narrow way, loose rock, and roots unearthed, and the fall wouldn't be a fun one to say the least.
