Red Top Mountain had a couple purposes on this adventure. Located in the Blewett Pass off Hwy 97 and not too far from the rock shop First Creek Treasures and Gifts.
Miles- 1.3 miles
Elevation- 350ft gain
This trail doesn't only feature a fire lookout but if you go beyond and know where to look you can find geodes, thunder eggs, and Ellensberg Blues. This type of rock hounding isn't as easy as crystal digging at Hanson Creek but is far easier then some geode hunting I have done.
The parking lot near the trailhead is large and does have a restroom. The trek from the parking lot to the fire lookout is short and easy, you will be on an exposed mountain side. The trek is very short so really no worries on that exposure.
From the lookout you can wind down and do the loop back to the parking lot or venture on passed and see if you have any luck finding some of the areas beautiful crystals and gems. Ellensberg Blues are some of the rarest stones on Earth, as they can only be found in this area and NO where else in the world!!
