This was such an amazing little, big adventure. Myself, two other mothers, and one of their daughters got a cute little cottage for the Saturday night prior to Mother's Day. This gave us the opportunity so adventure the area and not have to get up so early to make the long drive from home, as this location was only 15 minutes from Mailbox Peak.
We had a pleasant surprise on our early morning drive to the trailhead, a huge herd of elk welcomed us to the Cascades. After stopping and enjoying the views of the sunrise, mountains, and the very large herd of elk we made our way to the trailhead. We arrived at about 0600 hours and was on the trailhead at 0620 hours.
So my first Mailbox Peak venture I did the new trail and it was long and strenuous, we opted to do the loop this go round, old trail up and new trail down. We took the trail slow and steady, took breaks, lots of pictures, and snacked a lot.
We hit the boulder field at about 1000 hours, since most of the old trail is in the shade we were excited enjoy a bit of beautiful sun. This was a quick regret as we were soon sweating and out of breath, but we kept trudging along. At the rock scramble was quite difficult for me since I decided to go about it in the most unique but totally me way (see last pictures!)
Once at the top we had beautiful 360 degree views of mountains and could just barely see the Seattle skyline in the distance. We hung out, ate our lunches, and enjoyed the amazing view before heading back down.
Each of us put our little trinket in the box, I chose not to take anything this time, but I put in a small wooden bear that I had wood burned on. I would love to know who has it if anyone knows! I hope it is enjoyed and has a good home.
The way down was long and exhausting. It took FOREVER!!! But I saw things this time that I hadn't noticed my first time doing it. The little signs, chainsaw pics, and the beautiful flowers blooming.
We did it though! We survived and felt amazing and accomplished for it. I couldn't have ask for a better Mother's Day... ok I guess a spa day with facials, massages, and a mud bath would have been pretty amazing too.
Yes I did! I climbed the rock scramble in a Trex costume! Let me tell you what... it was hot and terrible. I kept fogging up the little plastic window so I could see a thing, but people enjoyed it and got some good laughs.
