3/21/2020 Rock Candy Mountain
This hike marked the beginning of out Mt. St. Helen's summit training and also marked our last hike until the parks reopen because on Covid-19 unbeknownst to us. This has been a hike I have wanted to do only because of the name.
When we got to the trailhead there was only one other car there and we were the first ones on the trails. We did the loop counter clockwise so we were going up the steeper portion of the hike and went down the more gradual elevation change. During the switch backs we encountered an unknown animal, we plus the dog hear a loud deep noise and the dog went into protective mode but we did not see the animal running off.
After the steep portion and climbing over some recent cut trees piled to the north side of the road you get back on a logging road with amazing views to the south.
Once at the peak there is a bit of a view through some tree but it's a good spot to enjoy a rock candy sucker.
The last portion of the hike is longer the the first but the elevation change is much more gradual. It's a combination of logging road and trails. The last 3 miles of the hike we had to share the trail with dirt bikes and bicycles, and a lot more hikers.
Over all it was a good hike good distance will a little bit of an elevation gain.
With all the trails closed for a few weeks, pending the Covid mess we may do it again to re-begin our Mt. St. Helen's summit in June.
