Let the Camper Van Conversion Begin

On 1/21/2020 we purchased a 1995 Ford econoline E350 to convert into our very own camper van. We entertained many different ideas of what to convert; an RV, a short bus, an ambulance, or a cargo/passenger van? After evaluating many questions I was told to answer before making a purchase. Here are the questions and thoughts that led us to purchase this style vehicle.

  • Where do you plan on going? Campsites with hookups? Or more remote locations?
  • Will you be hooking up to power or wanting to be off the grid?
  • Will you be outsourcing most of the conversion or doing it yourself?
  • Is this a weekend camper, long trips, or are you going to live in it?
  • Are you mechanically inclined? Can you fix something if you break down?
  • Are your going to pull a loan for the purchase?
  • What are you hoping to have for gas mileage? Is that a factor for you?
  • What are you comfortable driving? smaller rigs or very large ones?
  • Do you plan on pulling anything behind your rig?
We personally know we want to do a 4x4 conversion and that we will have many remote location camping adventures, so we wanted something that we can convert and that can get in and out of some offroad conditions. We also want our van setup to be completely off the grid yet have the option to plug in if the source is available. Luckily my husband and I are very mechanically inclined and handy with a hammer. So the only things we shall outsource are the replacement of the windshield and the exterior paint job.
I will post regular or big project update blogs with pictures and videos. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I will also be posting some of the links I have found very helpful through this process.
Enjoy!!
